Nature-Based Curriculum

  • Profound Exploration

We value uninterrupted exploration when in nature. This means exploring our world in all kinds of weather and in all types of conditions. We get messy while we investigate and allow curiosity to take reign and guide the process of becoming one with our environments. We use our senses, critical thinking, and a gentle approach as we navigate the world. wBees students go to the local greenspaces in our community daily to continue learning and engaging beyond the four walls of the classroom.

  • Respect for the Environment

We respect all living things just as we respect those in our community. From the beginning, we learn that mother nature is what gives us life, and the Earth is our home. It is our duty to respect, nurture, and keep it safe and clean. We foster this appreciation for nature by learning about seasonal and life cycles, how to care for plants and animals, and the beautiful differences that exist in nature around the planet. We aim to embrace and consistently teach sustainable living practices by taking every opportunity to inform children of how their actions have the power to make an impact on their world.

  • Personal Connection

When children understand that they are part of a greater whole, they begin to see life through a different lens. At wBees, we engage with nature with conscious and mindful intentions, understanding our impact on each space that we inhabit and visit. We respect all living things and extend our gratitude to all of nature’s gifts that provide so much for us on a daily basis. When playing and exploring, we make a conscious effort to reflect on our personal feelings and thoughts as well as our decisions and impact. We listen to our bodies and our emotions while also keeping in mind our greater community and nature.

“There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing” - an old Norwegian saying

wBees students go outside daily, in all kinds of weather, and engage with various messy materials. As part of our connection to nature, we believe it is important to experience the changing seasons and explore in the rain, under the sun, digging in the dirt and snow.

We ask that all of our students come prepared with appropriate gear to facilitate outdoor learning and exploration. We use full-body rain suits (Tuffos) and boots to keep our clothes dry while jumping in puddles. We suit up with snow pants, jackets, gloves, and hats to play in the snow. We wear our bathing suits and sun hats to get wet in the sprinklers in the summer.

No matter the season, we’re outside, appreciating the changing nature of our world and learning from it while getting messy in the process!
